Went to Saltholme [again!] this time to try for the glossy ibis reported at Haverton Hole. Carried camera, bins and scope all the way, sat for 3 hours on a bench [thanks, bench] watching the reedbed where the ibis, 10 minutes before my arrival, had disappeared. Never saw the bird and didn't see a lot else but the company was good. Took a couple of photos to pass the time.
Canada Goose
A pair of greast crested grebes were starting to display but one of them, the female, I presume [!] seemed to lose interest and disappeared from view. Her decision to break off the interaction is marked by the top section of the next photo...
Great Crested Grebe
Needed to get back for a comfort break and decided to head home, calling at the York University East Lake in case there might be any waders or sand martins. They are late this year. Saw a redshank, two oystercatchers and little else other than a pair of mallard, a couple of pairs of tufted duck and a few greylags. Park by the church at SE628505 and walk south-east at the traffic lights if you go there. It's worth a visit as spring unfolds. We saw wood sandpiper last year and little-ringed plover has been seen.
In the evening went to York RSPB meeting: Ian Robinson from Filey on the 'Wilfdlife of the Seychelles'. Slick presentation, good pictures. He's worth going to see.
