Manavalins!

Spelling variable. Rarely found in dictionaries but can be tracked on-line. I know it from my childhood, a word my mother used for a meal using bits and pieces, left overs and similar things. So here they are: a few bits and pieces, scraps of unimportance, gleanings from a very thin table.

July 7th: Wirral Country Park by the sailing club slipway.

Knot, I think but I'm knot sure. Dunlin?

Hilbre Island in the distance. Assured by all the folk with scopes that this was the gull-billed tern. Appalling photo I'm afraid. Canon 7D still proving challenging focus-wise - but it was a long way off!

July 8th: Heslington Tillmire and Blacktoft

Small skipper on the Tillmire

Green sandpiper and bearded tits at Blacktoft.

July 10th: messing with camera settings again in the garden! Canon 100mm macro working pretty well with the 7D, I think...

Freesia laxa, a hardy South African corm, tiny plant never more than 4 inches high with half-inch red flowers [we have a white form too]. Plume moth

Hover fly I presume.  Satisfying image.
